Jervis Bay is one of those places that looks edited in photos — until you get there and realise the water really is that colour. It’s about three hours south of Sydney, which makes it the perfect escape for a full day out of the city.
This guide covers everything you need to plan a Jervis Bay day trip: how to get there, what to see, when to go, and how to fit it all into one day without spending it stuck behind the wheel.
Where is Jervis Bay?
Jervis Bay sits on the NSW South Coast, roughly 180 km south of Sydney. The drive takes around three hours each way, depending on traffic and stops. The bay is surrounded by small beach villages like Huskisson, Vincentia and Hyams Beach, plus Booderee National Park on the southern side.
The best things to see on a Jervis Bay day trip
Hyams Beach
Hyams Beach is famous for its fine, bright white sand and clear turquoise water. Arrive early if you can — it gets busy on summer weekends, and parking fills quickly.
Wild kangaroos
Jervis Bay is one of the easiest places near Sydney to see kangaroos in the wild, grazing on open grass near the beaches. Keep your distance, don’t feed them, and you’ll get great photos.
Dolphins and whales
The bay is home to a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, and during the migration season (roughly May to November) humpback whales pass along the coast. Spotting them from the shore is never guaranteed, but it’s a real possibility.
Sea Cliff Bridge
On the way down, the Sea Cliff Bridge near Wollongong is one of the most scenic coastal drives in Australia. The bridge curves out over the ocean along the cliffs — stop for photos and a short walk.
Kiama Blowhole
Kiama sits roughly halfway between Sydney and Jervis Bay. When the swell is up, the blowhole sends seawater shooting high into the air. It’s a perfect stretch-your-legs stop.

When is the best time to visit?
- Spring (September–November): mild weather, fewer crowds and whale season still running.
- Summer (December–February): the best beach weather, but book early — it’s peak season.
- Autumn (March–May): warm water, calmer days and quieter beaches.
- Winter (June–August): cooler, but great for whale watching and empty beaches.
Driving yourself vs. joining a tour
Driving yourself gives you flexibility, but it also means six hours behind the wheel, finding parking at busy beaches, and working out the timing for every stop.
A small-group day tour takes care of all of that. You get picked up in Sydney, someone else does the driving, and a local guide knows exactly where to find the kangaroos, the best viewpoints and the quietest spots. You just enjoy the day.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a towel
- Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses (the Australian sun is strong, even in spring)
- A refillable water bottle
- Comfortable shoes for short walks
- Your camera — you’ll use it more than you think
